December 11: Individuality

Dear Jesus, I really think that a large part of the reason that we have such a difficult time giving ourself to You is because of some of the values of our society. We are taught in many subtle ways that individuality is a virtue to be nurture and cherished. The song "I've Gotta Be Me" is often wildly applauded because of the emotional effect it has on an audience, yet nothing could be more opposed to Biblical teaching. Help us to be able to sort through all these ingrained messages and reject those that keep us from a satisfying relationship with You. Let us realize that You want to help us project our God-given personalities, but that stubbornly clinging to our individuality is outright defiance against You. Let us trust You enough to be able to realize that submission to You is not imprisonment, but the ultimate in freedom.
