October 16: The Key to the Master's Orders

[TRAVEL ALERT -- Jerald and I will be out of town for the next week, so I don't know if I'll have access to a computer, but I'll still be reading and praying with you. Until next time....]

All of you already know that I have become a BIG believer in prayer! Of course I agree with every single point that Chambers makes regarding the absolute importance of staying in prayer. So I guess I was just smugly sailing over today's reading until these words jerked me to a halt:

"Suppose the crisis comes....are you there as a labourer to reap the harvest for Jesus Christ?"

Suddenly, very unpleasant images floated through my mind of the many times when I have been "too busy" to act upon the prompting to provide a service to someone who needs help or comfort. Right now my justification that "I prayed" seems a pretty lame excuse for not making that call, or cooking that dish, or sending that card.

Dear Jesus, it seems that, on our own, we are incapable of maintaining the proper balance of being missionaries fueled by prayer. We have so many driving forces that want to push us around like hurricane winds - ambition, physical desires, peer pressure, jobs, school, selfishness, laziness, sleepiness, and somewhere in there, a desire to serve and please You. We have no hope of maintaining the right direction for our lives or charting a heirarchy of correct priorities without Your guidance. Please teach the children of my heart to hear Your voice, so small and quiet, so that they will know it anywhere.
